Instantly, my joy is washed away. So, this is it. I force myself to smile. "You've been amazing." I mean every word. "Thank you for tonight."

I catch Val's grin from across the room and shake my head. Her smile falls just as soon as mine. I say my goodbyes quickly, careful of spending too much borrowed time, and let Christian loop his arm through mine.
