    Guarded: A Roleplay

Post  PuppyWithATutu on Sun Mar 10, 2013 8:03 am

    "So, did you tell him?"

I shoot a look at my friend Chloe from across the table, rolling the straw in my martini glass around between my fingers as my lips twitch into a grin. "He grounded me for a month just for smoking a little dope," I remind her. "That shit's legal in, like, three states now. And I'm twenty-three!"

    "Paige, move out," Chloe suggests.

I glare. "I might have to sneak out to enjoy a drink, but I have no intention of moving out of that mansion. Having an uncle as a politician kind of trumps living with the rules."

Chloe rolls her eyes. "You're one spoiled bitch. Yet, somehow I still love you."

I stick out my lips and flick my straw until it's free from the glass, splashing her carefully made up face with my apple martini. "It's the shopping sprees, whore. Don't get all sentimental."

Just then, I feel a dead weight beside me. Jake. I sneak a look at Chloe from the corner of my eye, and she's doing her best not to laugh. "How's the internship?" he asks, leaning a little too closely and reeking of beer. People say you're supposed to grow out of acne at a certain age, but he's almost twenty-five and no dice. He'd ask me out every week in high school. Not that he's not nice or whatever, but you'd think he'd learn to take a hint.

"Internship's great," I manage, cringing when he puts an arm around me.

"Enough with the standing around in fashion, babe," he drawls, nuzzling his nose into my hair. "You should be the one on that catwalk. God, the fantasies I had about you in high school. Middle school..."

I spring from my seat, causing Jake to topple over and do a face-plant on the floor. Chloe's beyond any control now. She's laughing her ass off. I grimace, scoop up my martini glass and take a sip as Jake writhes at my feet. "Jake? You're disgusting. You're not telling me anything I don't already know, though, so you and your slimy, overly hairy hand can just finish the night off yourselves."

Behind me, everyone roars into laughter. It's as if they hang around just to be seen with the rich girl. I don't know. I'm not exactly nice to them, but no one seems to care. And there are very few people in the world that I care about, one of them being Hannah, so having a few wannabes laugh at my jokes doesn't do much but bloat my ego. I sigh and pick up my purse.

"Let's go, skank," I grin at Chloe, and then we're off.
    -----

It's so nice outside at this time of night, I decide to neglect taking a cab on my way home. I'll walk. I'm also in no mood for facing my overbearing uncle, either. I didn't do my workout this morning, so it's perfect. My heels are becoming unbearably painful, so much so that I want to take them off, but then I decide against it. If I want to look good, I have to embrace the pain. The shit we do for men, I think to myself, and I'm still single.

Chloe's a traitor whore. She went home with Mark, some hottie doctor-in-training from the bar. I find myself laughing at the thought. I've taught my girl well.

When my heels just aren't cutting it and I've crossed the line between pain and agony, I lean against the nearest brick building in upstate New York and start to kick them off. The first heel doesn't hit the concrete before I'm peering down the alley at my left. Three men stand in a small circle, wearing all black, arms folded at their chests, and one man stands alone against the wall. He's sputtering something, but I can't make it out.

Shit, am I witnessing a robbery? Gang stuff? I should probably run. Goddamn heels.

I hear something click. The man actually cries out. Spooked, I peek around the corner again. The man at the front of the circle is holding a gun. Before I have the time to even process what's happening, a bang sounds out.

    I scream. Loud.

The men turn to find me standing, having witnessed the murder of their guy, eyes wide, and all it takes is for one of them to step towards me, for one dead, blank look to wash over me and suddenly I'm filled with memories. I hope they won't kill me, I wish people would stop dying in front of me, God I can't just die, then my heel catches on the concrete and I stumble and everything turns black.

Heath was just typing away on his laptop, taking a break and yawning. He had been here all night working on a case. This was the life he asked for as his mother likes to remind him, every chance she gets. Finally, coffee was definitely needed.

He got up and headed into the break room, looking at the coffee pot and took a sniff. It was definitely old, rolling his eyes and dumping it out in the sink. He started to make a fresh pot, "There he is..." looking around to see two co-workers.

"Conners..., of course you'd make yourself visible when fresh coffee is around." Heath said, chuckling slightly. Conners smirked,"Fresh or not, this coffee sucks either way..."

Heath looked at him, as he finished putting some sugar in his cup "Sorry it isn't Starbucks Princess." He decided to take a break and sat with them for a bit, such a hard worker and he never took his breaks, Captain always had to remind him but it's a quality he liked in the kid.

"Let me guess...what you did last night, work?" Conners said, sitting down. "Yeah...this case is definitely weird..."

"Weird how?" He was asked curiously.

"Seems the victim had a stalker but now that stalker has amnesia and doesn't remember a thing." Heath answered, flipping the paper. Their is a page about Senator Allen, as Heath glances.

"You can't make that shit up..., how's Julie doing with the late hours?" Conners asked, "She's fine..., it's an understanding we have had from the start. It's actually refreshing to have a woman, who has her own life and doesn't call me every hour of the day."

Heath stood up, chugging down the rest of coffee. Conners stood as well, "Come on...beers and wings later?"

Heath nodded, "Probably, see what I find out today."

Captain then suddenly walks in,"Detective Forbes, my office..." And without anything more, the man leaves the room. Heath and Conner give each other a wondering gaze and finally he heads into his bosses office.

Inside is,"Senator Allen..." Heath says, stating the obvious. The Senator stood and shook Heath's hands, "Sharp eye kid, I like it...I can take it from here Captain Taylor.Thank you for letting me use your office."

Captain nods and leaves shutting the door, Heath looks at the Senator who indicates he sits down. Heath does so, Senator across from him "Detective Forbes, I must say...you have a very impressive resume for a young man, 28 and a detective...that certainly is something."

"Thank you sir" Heath says, formerly and keeping his focus on the man in front of him. Senator smiles kindly, "Heath, can I call you that? My image is very important...people need to know the man in charge, that he can keep charge of the people in his home..."

Heath stays quiet, not really does he like being called by his real name. Senator goes on,"My niece, tragic story..parents died and I took her in. Though I love her, she keeps getting into trouble..partying, doing drugs..."

"Sir, what exactly does this have to do with me?" Heath finally said, growing impatient. He had a case to get back to. Senator looked at him,"I need someone to watch her, she doesn't understand how their are always threats against me and I fear the worst..."

Before Heath could comment, Richard reclined himself at the edge of the captain's desk with the grace of someone who knew he had the world in his hands. "Heath, my niece was found passed out near an alley outside One. It's a bar she frequents often, though I forbid her from going."

He frowned. "Last year I'm sure you saw her on the front of every newspaper in the US, dancing on that same bar and scantily clad. Things like this can't happen in my position."

Heath remained silent, so Richard continued on. "She was released from the hospital this morning. She won't tell me what she was thinking doing in that area. Hell, someone heard a gunshot not far from where she'd been. She could have been that close to being... well. I'm sure you understand."

Heath looks at him,"I understand and with all due respect sir, I understand that this is wasting my time." He stands up, Senator looks at this,"I want you to watch her, guard her..protect her, which ever you would like to call it. Her every move, I will not have this happen again."

Heath looks at the man before him, "I am a Detective, not a babysitter for some kid."

"Lance Corporal Forbes, isn't it?" Richard said, catching Heath before he could leave the room. The rage in Heath's eyes when their gazes met was a definite confirmation.

"A military scout sniper. Never missed, did you? Came home a war hero." He pulled a small folder from within his suit jacket pocket and scanned the papers inside. "Shame, though, what happened in Afghanistan."

Heath looks at the Senator, "And this is how the troops are treated when they come back? Blackmailed, I wonder how that will make you look in the media?"

Senator looks at him,"That's it...this is why I chose you, I am willing to pay you more money than you can possibly think, maybe buy a ring..for that pretty girlfriend of yours? I am sure she doesn't know what the real hero got up to, in the war, does she? It was kept off the records..."

Heath looks at him, "Accidents happen..." Senator looks at him,"I am sure that's how the parents would see it."

Heath steps up, "And you...threatening me, not very smart. Maybe I show you exactly what happened?"

Senator laughs,"Ease up G.I. Joe, you are working for me. It's already been cleared with your Captain, the case you were working has been given to someone else. I am paying you very well for it and let's just say...,if everyone knew the truth about you and what you did, well I wouldn't trust a gun in your hand...neither will any other police department."

Senator makes way to leave, "I have your contact information, I'll be in touch...and also, thanks for the vote." He leaves just like that and Heath storms up to his Captain, he complains and demands this not happen.

"I cannot get you out of it Forbes, he assured me it will be 6 months at least." Captain says, "6 months! I am using everything I have...to watch over an Olsen twin?"

Captain looks at him,"Their is no arguing with this, you will do your job." The man walks off and stops, coming back and hands him a file on the girl. Heath leaves the station.

It's quiet at the pub tonight, and if there's anyone who needs to get piss drunk, it's me. It's been a week since the murder. The bartender from One apparently found me and brought me home that night. I actually spent a night with him once. He brought me straight home to my father, said I must have had a little too much to drink, and I swear I'd only had two martinis. I'm no lightweight. I know what I saw. I just can't tell anyone.

So, getting plastered is really striking my fancy.

Chloe sits across from me again, drinking a cosmo. I've stepped up from the chick drinks and ordered a whiskey sour. It's way too strong for my taste, but that's what I'm going for. By the time I've started feeling the effects of my wise life choices for tonight, Chloe's piped up, a twinkle in her eye.

    "Man god, two o' clock."

She whispers like this when she sees someone yummy. I cock my head to the side. All I see is a big man that's twice our ages. Combined. "Didn't know cosmos altered your perception all that much, Chlo," I murmured.

She huffs. "Look, no one knows where the hell two o' clock really is. It's a room, not a clock. I meant for you to follow my eyes!"

I follow her eyes, which go from glaring at me to soft and doe-eyed when she takes in the man sitting at the bar. He nestles a beer in his hand, he's dressed in a V-neck shirt, a black leather jacket and faded jeans topped off with a pair of nice boots and I want to climb him like a tree. He's scorching.

I lick my lips before any drool can escape. "Holy hell, I'd worship the shit out of that man god," I whisper, and Chloe laughs. "Figures. He's probably taken. No guy looks like that and doesn't have some quality kitty to come home to."

I shoot her a look. "Who the fuck cares? It's flirting. It's harmless."

Chloe grins. "You are the worst."

I have nothing to say to that. I simply shrug, straighten the straps to my barely-there dress, and thank the gods for giving me a great rack before strutting up to the bar.

I plop down beside my man god, and when he turns to face me, I give him a coy smile. "Hey, there."

Heath had been drinking a lot more this passed week, not long ago was he tracking down murderers but now he was babysitting some spoiled brat. Everything he accomplished to do this? He wouldn't lie, the money he was offered, was more than he would ever make in his life.

He would follow this child, to her work. He'd pretend to be a model or who knows what, he kept his distance as he watched her every move. Only a couple days ago did his girlfriend find the woman's file.

He explained the whole thing and she mentioned how she's heard of this girl, how often her name has been in the papers.

Finally, it was a Friday night and he decided to drop in on the pub she was in. He ordered a beer and took a swig, watching the hockey game on the television screen in front of him. It was only till this kid sat next to him, did he actually look at her.

He took in what she was wearing, she was pretty cute but just gave off this unflattering image. Noticing she said something to him, "Can I help you with something?"

Well, this one isn't making anything easy on me. Is he gay? If he's this good-looking and hasn't fallen at my feet just yet, there has to be something. No, a gay man would compliment me on my hair or something. This one radiates heterosexual male. I'm willing to bet he's a beast in the bedroom.

I force a smile, though I'm feeling slightly discouraged by his response. No guy's ever regarded me with such... ambivalence. "For starters, you could be a dear and give me a name," I suggest, and then I extend my hand to him. "I'll start. Paige Andrews."

Heath looks to her, how she's eying him. He looks over to the friend whose watching and finally looks back, "Wish I could give you an answer but I rather stay a mystery and I am sure my girlfriend would appreciate that."

He stood up and laid down some money for his beer, "You have good night." With that, he turned and made his way out of the bar and got into his car across the street and sat, waiting for her to leave and make her way to the club One, which could be seen up the street.

Me? Rejected? This night is really starting to blow. I'll give him props for being faithful and whatnot, but rejection is rejection. It fucking hurts.

I brush past Chloe with a roll of my eyes, and she shoots me a look of pity as I down the last of my drink. I'm done with this stupid pub. The real partying goes down at One, and that's where I'm headed. Maybe I'll let a guy take me back to his place. It may seem stupid, the thought that I'm somehow getting back at this stranger I don't even know, but it seems like a good idea right now. It's been a while since I've made more questionable life decisions than lighting up a blunt or getting trashed in a nightclub. I could use a random night of fun. Maybe it'll take off the edge of not being wanted.

One is a great place, but it's in a seedier part of town. I should know; I saw a guy being murdered here last week. Why am I back? Because I don't let shit scare me away. Because I'm stupid. Take your pick. Chloe's going to make an appearance later on; she ran into an old buddy at the pub. So I'm all alone here, in this same area, and paranoia whips its ugly head around and follows my tail.

I feel as if I'm being watched. I pick up my pace and hug my arms to my chest. All I need is to get to the club, dash inside and get some guy to see me out. Did they catch those guys? The thought consumes me until I'm nearly about to turn back where I came from and hide. I never even told anyone what I saw. If I go missing, my own silence will be my death sentence. I saw their faces pretty well. I could pick two of them out of a line-up, I'm sure. And now it's a little too late for that.

When I catch the entrance to the club, I practically sprint inside. The pumping bass and dancing bodies soothe me almost immediately. I'm safe here. Lots of people. No guns, no gangsters. Just drinks, dancing and a good time. I let the air of familiarity wash over me, and soon the hours drain away. I'm a little tipsy, so I decide on finding a cab home. After I get one last drink.

I make my way to the bar, seeing one man in black at the table's edge. His jacket's hood is pulled over his head, and he nestles a glass of hard liquor in his hand. His eyes never leave mine.

My skin prickles with goosebumps. Something about him is eerily familiar, and I don't like it. I slap down my drink, along with a nice wad of cash for the bartender, and wrap my arm around the first guy I see. He's not bad-looking, I figure, and he's tall enough to be intimidating. He grins when I bat my lashes and lean closer.

"Let's get out of here," I purr, and like a good horny guy, he goes along. He slides on his jacket, slides his arm around my waist, and pulls me towards the exit doors. I stop him, eyes wide. "No. We'll use the back doors."

    He hesitates. "Uh... okay."

I give him a smile and slip my hand into his back pocket. We might as well pass for a couple. He can get me safely somewhere, I'll tell him thanks for being my bodyguard for tonight, and get back home to my uncle. I hope nothing happens to this guy. He's nice enough.

We reach the back doors, and suddenly the feel of his hand at my side is gone. I panic and turn back to find him. He smirks. "Sorry, sexy. I drove my boys here tonight. They'll need to know to hitch a ride back."

    I wait.

He shakes his head. "You go on out. I'm parked across the street. Silver Mazda, ghetto white door."

Go on out? Oh, hell no.

"I'll wait," I glare, crossing my hands and leaning against the back doors impatiently. He can't even be a gentleman and walk me out? I'm supposed to wait by his car like the world's most convenient whore?

But these aren't the opening kind of doors. The moment my back hits them, they swing open and I'm standing outside. No, stumbling. My heel catches on the uneven concrete, and I'm sailing.

I flail, prepared to greet the pavement teeth-first, and grunt when my chest hits something big. A man. When I find his face, my mouth drops. It's him. The shooter. My knees start to weaken.

    "Shit," I breathe.

He merely smiles, all white teeth and beard stubble and perfect hair. "Fancy seeing you again."

    I shake my head, simultaneously taking a step back. "I didn't say anything. I swear. And I won't. It's cool," I plead. "We're cool."

He looks behind him, where three other men stand. That's one more than before. And I recognize one of them from last week. I recognize the other from inside the club. "Sorry, sweetheart," the first man says with a shake of his head. "Can't take that chance."

Heath watched as Paige walked to the club and inside it's doors, it wasn't long till he noticed a few other guys standing outside of it. One smoked a cigarette and looked to be waiting, as the other kept glancing down the alley.

Heath took his gun out of the glove compartment, tucked it away in his holster and got out of his car. Keeping a safe distance, till he watched the men walked down the alley. This was getting more suspicious by the second.

It was only moments later, he heard conversation and one of the voices belonged to Paige. He walked down and saw her, three men in front of her and she definitely didn't look to be having any fun, "Excuse me...is their a problem here?" Heath said, as he stepped up and showed his badge.

The men looked at this, quickly trying to retreat, one of them spoke up "Just talking to my girlfriend, she works here..."

Heath looks at Paige, who is shaking of fear. "I am actually here to talk to Ms.Andrews, if you gentleman are finished...and their is no problem, you can leave. Now." He ended with a serious tone in his voice.

The man who spoke up, looks to Paige and gives a kiss face. They walk away and Heath looks to her, "I suggest you make your way to my car, right now." He says, quietly and clearly as possible.

I stare at the man god turned rescuer cop and glare. How the hell does he know me? Then it hits me. My uncle. He's hired help. But if it weren't for him, I'd be dead.

    I grimace. "Sure thing... Officer."

I spin on my heel and cross my arms. There's a chill in the air, or maybe I'm still terrified, because I'm shaking as if someone's thrown me into a freezer. I want out of here, now.

I can hear steady footsteps behind me, and I know it's him. I walk a little faster. Let him keep up.

"Working for my uncle, huh?" I shoot back at him, not minding where my feet lead me. "You stalking me? I was just going to hitch a cab. You know, so you can get back to that girlfriend of yours. Maybe you'll want to want to know where to follow me next. I'll make it easy on you and make a list of my schedule. You wouldn't be the first asshole to tail my every move. Granted, you'd be the first attractive one."

He ignores pretty much everything coming out of her mouth and opens the passenger door, "I said to get in the car, if you continue to keep talking, I am moving you to the back seat."

He looks at her, serious for her to get in. He is clearly not going to start talking about anything.

I spin around to face him, hoping I appear impervious to the toned jawline and the full lips and the filled out shirtsleeves that hint at the massive biceps beneath them. My eyes travel downward of their own accord. His shirt is tight. I could practically trace the six pack of hard, defined abs beneath the material. Jesus.

I flit my gaze back to his face. "I appreciate the whole knight in shining armor routine, Officer, but I'll take a cab."

Really, I want nothing more than to be with this guy, because I've never felt safer in my life than I do now, but I also have my pride. He's being cold and cruel and he rejected me and he can shove it all up his ass. I'll be fine.

"Follow me, I don't care," I add, when he makes no move to let me past. "Wouldn't want the boss to think you're slacking on the stalking detail."

Heath looks at her, finally growing impatient and literally puts her in there himself. He walks around and sits in the drivers, "Now, I am going to ask this once...and I mean, once. Who where those men?"

    He glares at her again.

Dammit. I'm not a liar by any means, and I don't make a habit out of it, but how do I tell him I witnessed a freaking murder and didn't tell anyone? Those guys probably have more acquaintances. Even if they go away for life, there'll be someone who'll know who I am. It's not hard to find the senator's niece.

While I remain silent, I feel his glare on me and I fidget in my seat. For someone so hot, he can be scary. I'd hate to be in an interrogation room across from him. One glare and I'd fess up about doing blow once at a party two years ago and stealing cookies from the cookie jar when I was seven years old. I sure hope he's a lot less standoffish with that girlfriend of his.

"No one," I murmur, doing my best to shrug as if I really am clueless. "I get admirers, I guess. They were kind of creepy."

He keeps his focus on her, giving a nod "If that's the case..." pretending to believe her, "I am taking you home and I want you to stay there."

He drives off, thinking about who those guys must be. He has to let the Senator know, as he thinks this, she is playing around with this radio.

I roll my eyes. "Yes, sir, Officer No-name."

I flick between the programmed stations. "Rock and blues. No pop? You're just depressing."

He meets me with silence. It's starting to become predictable.

Huffing, I leave the radio alone, and old Led Zeppelin fills the car. "So, what's the plan, Sunshine? You follow me around, make sure I don't get into any trouble?" I sigh. "My uncle and his image. If half the shit he did hit the papers..."

I forget for a moment that I've been talking to a cop. I quickly backtrack. "Okay, I'm being a bitch and you're clearly not some Chatty Cathy, so... thanks for saving me, I guess."

He drives the car up to the drive way, of this huge mansion. He looks at her,"Gun shots were fired, the night you got into an accident, the Senator informed me of this. I am not playing around, I am forced here..to watch you, because I am the best at what I do."

"Last time, who were those men?" Asking, in a final attempt.

Shit, this guy knows more than I thought. I want to tell him, but there's one of him and a shitload of them. I was already willing to lead a stranger from the club into a death trap earlier tonight, but this one is different. I have no doubts he can fend for himself, but me? I'll take no chances.

    But I won't exactly lie.

"They're... creeps who probably wished to cause me bodily harm and maybe death," I answer, not bothering to meet his gaze. "How the hell should I know?"

I open the passenger side door and swing one leg out until I'm only half inside the car. "Thanks for the ride."

Heath watches her get out, "I'll be around Andrews, stay in the house all night. I'm serious." With that, he drives off.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

He gets home, walking into his apartment and is greeted by his girlfriend. She kisses him, "Hey baby..." He smiles at her, "Hey...,thought you were out of town this weekend?"

"That's next weekend..." She says, reminding him. He nods, "Right, sorry...all the days seem muffled together, considering all I do is sit in my car and basically stalk a kid all day long. What smells good, you cooked something?"

He goes over to a crock pot, pulled pork. She follows him in, "Dinner tomorrow, just got it started...I know how you love it and babe, it's only for 6 months."

He looks at her,"I just...it's a waste of my time."

She hands him a beer and he sets it down, "Forget the beer.." pulling her towards him, causing her to giggle and they kiss.

"She's young, just remember that...deep down, you know she doesn't deserve to get hurt or worse. Be patient with her.." She adds in, he just nods and kisses her neck.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, he makes his way up to the mansion. It was early in the morning and he shares with her Uncle, what happened last night and that he can't keep it secret anymore, he has to be in plain view of her now and she's going to know it. He doesn't have a good feeling about those men and he will investigate it.

Her Uncle of course agrees and tells him to do whatever is necessary. Heath starts heading to the front door, when he hears a voice and it stops him.

"If it isn't Detective McSerious," I greet him, running a hand through my hair and playing with the drawstring of my pajama shorts. I'm wearing a tight tank top, too, just because.

"So, what's the sentencing?" I ask. "House arrest or more protective detail?"

Heath looks at her and reminds himself, what his girlfriend said just last night.

"Whatever you're doing, I am doing...I will be right outside, in my car and waiting for you to leave. You can also save me a lot of work and research...by telling me the truth. I am not your Uncle, I don't care or judge what you do."

"Yes, this is as nice as I get." He adds in.

I cross my arms, well aware of what that simple move is doing for my cleavage and the exposed skin above my shorts. "Nothing illegal, I assure you," I glare. "Last I checked, I'm twenty-three. I can go out for a drink if I want to. It's not my fault if someone tries to kill me afterward."

Crap. That just spewed out of my mouth. Here I go again, fidgeting beneath his gaze. "Maybe I have a flair for the dramatic. I just meant that they were scary. Anyone is, when you're alone at night."

I meet his gaze again. He's studying me, hard, and it has nothing to do with what I'm wearing. I wish it were.
